Preventative dentistry involves reducing the risk of future dental problems. One such measure includes fissure sealants.
Fissure sealants are used to reduce the incidence and progression of tooth decay in susceptible patients, such as children and teenagers with poor oral hygiene, deep fissures that easily collect bacteria, or those with a history of tooth decay.
The procedure involves placing a tooth coloured material into the pits and fissures of molar teeth, the most likely areas for tooth decay. No tooth structure is removed during the procedure and no numbing is required.
At future dental appointments, these susceptible teeth will be reassessed, ensuring that the tooth decay risk factors remain minimal with the help of the fissure sealants.
Enquire whether fissure sealants are right for your children at their next check up and clean.
Oral Health Tip: Rinse After Eating
Each time we eat a small snack or a large meal the environment of the mouth changes, becoming more acidic for a period of time. This allows for the bacteria that cause tooth decay to thrive. Foods and drinks with higher acidities, such as soft drinks and energy drinks, increase this effect, as well as leading to the erosion of tooth enamel over time. To reduce the effect of tooth decay and erosion we recommend drinking tap water after each snack or meal, helping decrease acidity levels in the mouth.
